Minnesota Set to Host Home Opener

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis program opens its 2025 home schedule this weekend at Baseline Tennis Center against Missouri, Colorado State, and St. Thomas.
The Gophers face Missouri on Friday, Feb. 7, at 3:30 p.m. (CT) before hosting a doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 8, against Colorado State at 11 a.m. (CT) and St. Thomas at 4 p.m.
The Competition
Minnesota holds a 5-5 all-time record against Missouri, with their last meeting on Feb. 23, 2020, ending in a 4-3 Gophers victory. The Tigers enter the matchup 3-0, with wins over South Dakota, Northern Illinois, and Saint Louis.
Deniz Turan defeated Missouri's Gian Octa earlier this fall in the B-draw finals at the ITA Central Regional Championships. Sofia Pinto also defeated Missouri's Sarah Hartel at the tournament.
Minnesota holds a 1-0 all-time record against Colorado State, winning their lone matchup 4-3 on Feb. 5, 2006. The Rams enter the weekend 1-1, with a 5-2 win over Montana and a 6-1 loss to Colorado.
The Gophers are 3-0 all-time against St.Thomas, with their latest matchup on Feb. 10, 2024, resulting in a 7-0 Minnesota win.
Minnesota went 2-0 against St.Thomas opponents in singles at the 2024 Gopher Invitational, as Aiva Schmitz defeated Anna Sidorenko and Nora Knezevic topped Caroline Lindahl.
Familiar Faces
Before joining Minnesota, Coach Lois Arterberry was a head coach at St. Thomas and an assistant coach at Missouri. She served as a volunteer assistant at Missouri in 2019-20 before being promoted to assistant coach for the 2020-21 season. Arterberry then became the head coach at St. Thomas from 2021 to 2023.
The Season So Far
Minnesota opened its season in Florida on Jan. 18, defeating Middle Tennessee State 4-2 in its first match before falling to Florida Gulf Coast 4-2.
On Jan. 19, the Gophers traveled to Boca Raton, Florida, where they lost to Florida Atlantic 4-0.
Minnesota bounced back on Feb. 1 in Ames, Iowa, with a 4-0 win over Air Force. The following day, the Gophers edged Iowa State 4-3, improving to 3-2 on the season.
Jeselle Ante went 2-0 in doubles and singles against Air Force and Iowa State, while clinching the overall victory against Iowa State's Valeska San Martin 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Aiva Schmitz, Sofia Pinto, Anlin Xie, Mia Liepert, and Jeselle Ante all earned singles wins against Air Force or Iowa State.
Minnesota secured the doubles point against Air Force and Iowa State, finishing the past weekend with a 4-2 record.
