Murphy Named January's National Player of the Month

2/6/2025 1:05:00 PM | Women's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS - Redshirt-senior forward Abbey Murphy has been named January's National Player of the Month by the Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA).

This marks back-to-back national monthly honors for Murphy this season, as she claimed National Co-Player of the Month for December, and her second January monthly award after being named WCHA Forward of the Month on Wednesday.

Murphy's second-career National Player of the Month honor was earned after recording 18 points (8g-10a) and a plus/minus of 11 throughout Minnesota's ten games in December. The Evergreen Park, Ill. native registered at least one point in all but two games during the month, including six multi-point games. She also tallied two game-winning goals, a power play goal, and a short-handed goal. Murphy is just the third player in the nation to reach the 50 point mark this season, which she did on Jan. 31 against No. 2 Ohio State, and also ranks third nationally in points per game (1.72).

In addition to her monthly honors, Murphy was previously named WCHA Forward of the Week on Nov. 18 and Dec. 9, and to the Preseason All-WCHA Team prior to the start of the season.

Murphy is the first Gopher student-athlete to earn multiple HCA National Player of the Month recognitions in the same season since Taylor Heise did so during the 2022-23 season.
