Patterson, Odukale Score 24 and 22, but No. 23 Illinois Earns Win

Lu'Cye Patterson scored a season-high 24 points and Femi Odukale had a season-high 22, but No. 23/25 Illinois (16-8, 8-6 Big Ten) shot 63.2 percent in a 95-74 win over Minnesota (12-12, 4-9 B1G) at Williams Arena.

Patterson made 9-of-17 field goals and was 6-of-6 at the free throw line for his third 20-point game of the season. He had 20 points versus Ohio State on Jan. 6 and 22 in the win versus Michigan on Jan. 16. Patterson added four assists and a rebound for the Gophers. Odukale notched his 22 points by going 8-of-17, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. He led Minnesota with five assists and added three rebounds and two blocked shots. Dawson Garcia finished with 12 points and six rebounds, while Kadyn Betts made two late three-pointers to finish with six points and Parker Fox had five points and three boards. Minnesota made 27-of-66 (.409) field goals, including 8-of-20 (.400) three-pointers, and 12-of-14 (.857) free throws.

Illinois' red-hot shooting was bolstered by making 19-of-26 (.731) second-half field goals. For the game, the Illini made 36-of-57 (.632) attempts, including 9-of-16 (.563) three-pointers, and 14-of-16 (.875) free throws. Will Riley led Illinois with 27 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, while Kasparas Jakucionis had 24 points, and Tomislav Ivisic finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

A pair of jumpers by Patterson had Minnesota up 16-11, but a 5-0 Illinois run tied the score with 13:57 left. Minnesota opened the game by making 6-of-9, including 4-of-5 from long-range. The Illini took their first lead by stretching their run to 9-0 before Asuma scored on a layup to cut it to 20-18. Illinois extended the lead to 24-18, but a layup by Garcia and a short jumper from Patterson pulled the Gophers within two. A 7-0 run by Illinois gave it a nine-point lead with 6:05 left in the half, but Patterson's three-point play trimmed the deficit to 31-25. The Illini took a 10-point lead with a 4-0 run, and Parker Fox cut it to seven with a three-point play, but Illinois answered with a 5-0 run to make it 40-28 and force a Minnesota timeout with 3:11 left. Garcia made a pair of free throws and Odukale hit his third three-pointer in four attempts pull the Gophers within 40-33, but Illinois closed the half with a 6-2 run for a 46-35 lead at the break.

Layups by Odukale and Patterson narrowed the deficit to 61-50, but the Gophers missed shots on back-to-back possessions that could have trimmed Illinois' lead even more, and the Illini extended the lead to 67-50 with 9:40 left. Odukale made his fourth three-pointer and Garcia scored to cut it to 69-55, but Illinois countered with a 7-0 run and led 76-55 with 7:00 remaining. Odukale made a pair of free throws to reach 20 points, topping his previous season-high of 18 points at Iowa, but Illinois pushed the lead to 28 points. Minnesota closed with an 11-4 run, including five points from Patterson and back-to-back three-pointers by Betts, but Illinois' hot shooting was too much for Minnesota to overcome.
