University of Minnesota men's basketball standout Dawson Garcia (Savage, Minn.) has been named a Second Team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media, announced today by the conference office. It marks the third straight season the senior has garnered All-Big Ten honors. Last year, Garcia was on the media's second team and coaches' third team, bettering his honorable mention in the 2022-23 season.

Garcia, a 6-foot, 11-inch senior forward, finished the regular season averaging 19.1 points, which ranked fifth in the Big Ten, while his team-best 7.5 rebounds ranks seventh in the league. In Big Ten games, Garcia ranked fourth in scoring averaging 19.2 ppg. In 31 games played, Garcia had 26 double-digit games this year, 17 20-point games and three 30-point performances. His 17 20-point games tied for first in the league with Nebraska's Brice Williams. Of those 20-point games, 11 came against Big Ten opponents. Garcia was named Big Ten Player of the Week once this season, when averaged 25.5 points to lead the Gophers to a pair of wins at Iowa and home against then-No. 15 Oregon. That week also followed when Garcia hit a buzzer-beater shot against Michigan the week before.

Garcia's 592 points this year is a career-best, which ranks 10th in school history for points in a single season. He contributed seven double-doubles this season, which bettered four in 2023-24 and three in 2022-23. Garcia is on pace to lead the team in both points and rebounds for the third consecutive year. The last player to lead the Gophers in points three-straight seasons dates back to Austin Hollins (2012-15).

Garcia has scored 1,535 points as a Golden Gopher and 2,030 as a collegiate athlete throughout his career. That number ranks 10th in school history (excluding vacated games) in just 88 Minnesota games. He has also established 500 Minnesota rebounds at 614 for the maroon and gold. With his numbers, he became the 22nd Gopher (excluding vacated games), reaching 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in the maroon and gold.

In addition to Garcia's All-Big Ten honor, red-shirt sophomore Kadyn Betts (Pueblo, Colo.) received Minnesota's Sportsmanship Award. After seeing action in eight games in the 2023-24 season, Betts doubled his court time, seeing action in 22 games this year and 106 minutes of play.

The Golden Gophers earned the No. 12 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, March 12-16 in Indianapolis at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Minnesota will face No. 13 seed Northwestern at 2:30 p.m., tomorrow on Peacock and KTLK (1130 AM/103.5 FM). The winner of that game will face No. 5 seed Wisconsin on Thursday.
