Minnesota Falls to McNeese State

BEAUMONT, TX --Freshman Kadence Williams, freshman Maddie Taylor and junior Ryann Schexnayder combined to throw a shutout on Tuesday as the McNeese Cowboys (14-12, 0-0 Southland) blanked the Minnesota Golden Gophers (11-13, 0-0 B1G) 2-0.
Junior Presley Hosick (6-4) started and took the loss in the circle for Minnesota. The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Junior Sydney Schwartz went one shutout inning while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out one.
At the plate, the Gophers were paced by freshman Jae Cosgriff, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Minnesota managed two chances with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. The 'U' last got a runner on third in the seventh, when sophomore Lucy Hooper made it 60 feet away from scoring with nobody out.
GAME NOTES
» The Gophers out-hit the Cowboys at a 5-4 clip.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 22 McNeese hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out two.
» Cosgriff led the Maroon and Gold at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a double.
» McNeese was led offensively by junior Jada Munoz, who went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
» Williams led the Cowboys pitching staff, throwing four scoreless innings.
UP NEXT
The 'U' will be back in action on Thursday in Oklahoma City, OK. They will take on Michigan State twice and Penn State twice while in Oklahoma. These games mark the beginning of Big Ten play for the Gophers. The 'U' will play one game per day beginning on Thursday against Michigan State.
