MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 4-seeded Golden Gopher women's hockey team's season will come to close after falling 6-2 to the top-seeded Wisconsin Badgers in Friday's NCAA Tournament semifinal at Ridder Arena.
The opening period saw an optimistic start for Minnesota, as the Gophers successfully killed off a five-minute major penalty, which was called 5:22 into the game. The optimism grew at the 14:14 mark, as senior forward Peyton Hemp lit the first lamp of the night, assisted by Ava Lindsay and Emma Kreisz. However, Wisconsin responded three minutes later with a Laila Edwards shorthanded goal, bringing the game even heading into first intermission.
The Badgers added two more scores in the first half of the second period, courtesy of Caroline Harvey and Kirsten Simms. Junior forward Josefin Bouveng brought the game back within two less than a minute after Simms' score, tallying her 13th goal of the season, assisted by Nelli Laitinen, 10:27 into the period. The game looked to remain 3-2 heading into second intermission, however Wisconsin's Casey O'Brien broke loose during a four-on-four and brought the game to 4-2 with exactly two seconds remaining.
The Gophers were unable to bounce back in the third period, giving up two more Badger scores, both by Laila Edwards, en route to a 6-2 season-ending loss on home ice.
Quotable:
"This is the hardest thing for an athlete or a coach," said head coach Brad Frost. "To lay it on the line in these one-and-done situations and not get to exactly where you wanted to get to. So, very difficult, however, I'm just super proud of our group. Love this team and the individuals on it, and I'm really proud of how they came together this year, played for one another, and left it out there tonight."
Notable:
- Josefin Bouveng has recorded 99 career points.
- Josefin Bouveng extends her point streak to four consecutive games.
- Ava Lindsay officially tallied her 50th career point.
