McEnelly Takes Third, VomBaur Eighth at NCAAs

PHILADELPHIA – A pair of Gophers cemented their spots on the podium Saturday as Session V wrapped up inside the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Redshirt freshman Max McEnelly finished in third place at 184 pounds, while redshirt junior Vance VomBaur claimed eighth place at 141 pounds. Coupled with Gable Steveson's spot in the heavyweight championship match Saturday night, it's the first time with three All-Americans for Minnesota since 2022 and the 30th time with at least that many in program history.

McEnelly's finish is the best by a Gopher at 184 pounds since Roger Kish also took third in 2007. Kish finished in second the year prior to that, while Gophers head coach Brandon Eggum is the only other Minnesota wrestler at 184 to finish third or better (second in 1999, third in 2000).

In the team standings, Minnesota is in fifth place with 51.5 points. Penn State has already clinched the team title and has 169.0 points, followed by Nebraska (109.0), Oklahoma State (94.5) and Iowa (77.0).

The No. 3 seed, McEnelly went up against Oklahoma State's No. 4 Dustin Plott, a four-time All-American and national finalist a year ago. After a scoreless first period, Plott rode out McEnelly in the second. In the third, Plott was allowed to escape and picked up another point off McEnelly's second stall call. With 45 seconds to go and trailing 3-0 with riding time locked, McEnelly got a takedown to even the match at 3-3 before releasing Plott to go down 4-3. Off the restart, McEnelly countered a Plott shot with his second takedown in 15 seconds and rode him out for a 6-5 victory.

To get to the third-place match, McEnelly first had to get past Maryland's No. 8 Jaxon Smith in the consolation semifinals. Escapes for each sent the match to overtime where McEnelly got in on a single and executed the takedown for the 4-1 win.

At 141 pounds, the sixth-seeded VomBaur was defeated by No. 9 Jacob Frost from Iowa State by major decision, 17-3. Finishing in eighth place for the second straight year, VomBaur is the 59th multi-time All-American in Gophers history and the fourth to do so at 141 pounds.

The 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships conclude Saturday night with Steveson facing No. 2 Wyatt Hendrickson of Oklahoma State in the final match of the season. Steveson, who is 1-0 all-time against Hendrickson, is looking to become the first three-time national champion in Gophers history. The finals start at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN.
