Zaltos is in the running for the 'Hesiman Trophy of College Track and Field'.
MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota men's track and field hammer thrower Kostas Zaltos has earned votes on the latest 'The Bowerman' Mid-Outdoor Watch List.
Zaltos has led the No. 3 ranked Maroon and Gold to new heights so far in 2025. He joins 22 other student-athletes across the nation that have received at least one vote from The Bowerman Advisory Committee.
The Bowerman will be awarded in December at the annual USTFCCCA Convention in Grapevine, Texas. Minnesota has never had a finalist, or an award winner, for The Bowerman, which is known as the 'Heisman Trophy of College Track and Field'.
This season Zaltos sits tied atop the NCAA standings in the hammer throw, along with CSUN, and fellow Bowerman vote receiver, Trey Knight. The Greek national threw his lifetime best mark of 77.91m (255-7) at the Pepsi Florida Relays and is undefeated this season. Most recently the graduate student won the 'Throwtown Ramona World Invitational' with his second consecutive meet with a hammer throw mark beyond 77 meters. Zaltos' sixth-attempt throw of 77.12m (253-0) helped him claim the top spot in Ramona while his teammate, and fellow Greek, Angelos Mantzouranis finished second. The 1-2 finish for the duo topped a field that included eight other top 100 hammer throwers in the world, including then-No. 7 Daniel Haugh, according to the IAAF World Athletics rankings.
After last weekend's results in Ramona, Okla., Zaltos is ranked No. 22 in the world and No. 11 in the 'Road to Tokyo'. The 2025 World Athletics Championships will take place in September with 36 total hammer throwers qualifying for the competition.
Next week Minnesota will host the Gary Wilson Invitational in Minneapolis at the University of Minnesota Track Stadium, where Zaltos is expected to compete. The home meet will be contested over one day on April 23, with the team then heading to the 115th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa from April 24-26.
