Minnesota Shuts Out Pitt 9-0

The Golden Gophers started the weekend off with a win on Friday night

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Junior Syndey Schwartz was dealing on Friday, throwing a three-hit shutout to lead the Minnesota Golden Gophers  (16-28, 4-15 B1G) over the Pitt Panthers (18-28, 6-15) 9-0.

Schwartz (6-14) went the distance for Minnesota, giving up three hits, walking two and striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Maroon & Gold took the lead for good in the second, scoring for the first time in the inning. Sophomore Jessa Snippes put Minnesota on the board with a two-out solo home run off senior Kyra Pittman.

The Gophers then tacked on runs in the third and fourth innings, with their biggest output coming in the third when they scored five times. The big hits in that inning were a two-run home run off the bat of Schwartz and a two-run double from senior Nani Valencia.

GAME NOTES

» Schwartz tossed a three-hit shutout for the Gophers.
» The Gophers power output was led by Valencia, who had two extra base hits in the ballgame.
» Valencia drove in five runs for Minnesota.
» Minnesota's highest scoring inning was the third, when it pushed five runs across.
» The Gophers had control of the rest of the game after jumping ahead of the Panthers 1-0 in the bottom of the second.
» The Gophers out-hit the Panthers at a 7-3 clip.
» Minnesota went 4-for-5 (.800) with runners in scoring position.
» Minnesota pitchers limited Pitt to just 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 21 Pitt hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and three fly balls while striking out four.
» The Gophers drew four walks from Pitt pitching.
» Valencia led the Gophers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and five RBI.
» Pitt was led offensively by senior Kylie Griggs, who went 2-for-3.
» Pittman led the Panthers pitching staff, throwing 2.1 innings of five-run ball.
