Gabriel’s Game-Winner Lifts Minnesota Over Rutgers, 2-1

9/18/2025 10:48:00 PM | Soccer

Jupp and Gabriel both scored

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of Minnesota women's soccer team (5-2-1, 1-0-1 Big Ten) defeated Rutgers (2-1-4, 0-1-1), 2-1, on Thursday evening at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, handing the Scarlet Knights their first loss of the season.

Sophomore Aaryn Gabriel sealed the victory with her first career goal, the game-winner. Senior Freya Jupp put Minnesota on the board first. Kate Childers, Ashley Thurk, Mariah Nguyen and Avery Petty each recorded an assist.

Goalkeeper Sarah Martin made three saves.

Despite a scoreless first half, Minnesota had two scoring chances to Rutgers' five. Martin kept the game level with two key saves in the first 45 minutes.

Jupp's goal came in the second half during the 48th minute. Childers sent a cross to Nguyen, who slid a pass to Jupp for the finish.

Rutgers' Marcia Ojo equalized two minutes later off a corner kick. After the service, the ball bounced around the box before Gabriela Gil headed it to Ojo, who scored.

Gabriel's game-winner came in the 74th minute. Thurk threw the ball in from the right sideline to Petty, who crossed it to Gabriel for the deciding goal.

Minnesota travels to face No. 12 Iowa on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on B1G+.
