No. 12 'U' Wins 10th Straight in Sweep at Marquette

The Gophers finished non-conference play at 10-1
MILWAUKEE, Wis. --Ā The No. 12 Minnesota volleyball team took down the Marquette Golden Eagles on Sunday evening in straight sets. The scores were 28-26, 25-21, 25-21.
"We're more than what we came in as and that's what you want at the end of non-conference play," said head coach Keegan Cook. "We've had quite a bit of adversity in these first five weeks of volleyball. To still be playing at a high level says a lot about our group."
Julia Hanson led Minnesota with 15 kills while Alex Acevedo had 11. Stella Swenson posted 42 assists and seven digs to pace the offense. Jordan Taylor had six kills with a career-high eight blocks while McKenna Garr and Kate Thibault had 17 digs each.
The Gophers (10-1, 0-0 Big Ten) outhit the Golden Eagles (6-4, 0-0 BIG EAST) .265 to .203, tallying 51 kills to MU's 49. Minnesota also led in blocks (13 to 3), digs (59 to 54), and assists (48 to 46).
Natalie Ring led Marquette with 18 kills while Isabela Haggard went for 38 assists and 12 digs.
The No. 12 Gophers closed out the non-conference portion of their schedule with 10 straight wins after falling in the season-opener to No. 9 Texas A&M.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Minnesota started out hot, scoring four of the first five points. MU would respond, scoring eight of the next nine to go up 9-5. A kill by Jordan Taylor and block by Taylor and Kelly Kinney made it 9-7 before three straight from MU put the home team up 12-7, forcing a Minnesota timeout. The 'U' would respond, scoring five straight to tie it up at 12. The Golden Eagles would make their run after that, tallying seven of the next 10 to go up 19-15, leading to a Gophers timeout. A trio of kills got the 'U' back in it at 19-18, forcing MU into a timeout. The two teams battled to the finish with multiple set points before the Gophers went up 27-26 and MU took a timeout. Minnesota took the set, 28-26, after a big time block to end it.
SET 2 | The Gophers started strong again in the second set, scoring five of the first eight. MU would tie it up at six and seven before the 'U' went up two at 9-7 after kills from Hanson and Myers. The two teams would exchange points all the way up to the media break, where Minnesota took a 15-14 lead after Kinney's fifth kill of the match. Another kill from Kinney and one from Hanson gave the Gophers a set-high three point lead at 17-14, forcing a timeout from MU. After a couple of kills from Myers, the 'U' would go up by as many as four at 20-16 before two kills from the Golden Eagles made it 20-18, leading to a Minnesota timeout. The Gophers kept the momentum going, scoring five of the final eight points to win, 25-21, and go up 2-0. Hanson finished it out with a left handed tip to put her team in firm control.

The Gophers cut it to one at 7-6 before the Golden Eagles scored five of the next seven to take a 12-8 lead, forcing Minnesota into a timeout. MU would keep the 'U' at arms length until a 4-0 Gophers run tied it up at 15. Taylor had a kill, Swenson and ace and Acevedo and Taylor combined for a stuff in the spurt. After the timeout, the Gophers kept the pressure going, scoring three of the next four to go up 18-16, forcing an MU timeout. Two blocks in a row from Taylor combined with a kill from Hanson and block from Kinney and Taylor made it 22-16, putting Minnesota in control. MU would get as close as 23-20, leading to a Gophers timeout. Minnesota was able to finish it out at 25-21 after a kill from Kinney and a solo block from Swenson.
