Minnesota Drops to Michigan State, 2-1

Paige Kalal scored the lone goal on the evening
ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of Minnesota women's soccer team (5-4-1, 1-2-1 Big Ten) fell to Michigan State (5-2-4, 2-0-2) by a score of 2-1 on Thursday evening at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, in front of 562 fans.
The Golden Gophers tallied 10 shots on the night, led by Paige Kalal, who scored Minnesota's lone goal. Caroline Birdsell was credited with the assist.
Minnesota struck first in the 10th minute. Birdsell gained possession above the 18-yard box and sent a pass to Kalal on the right side. Kalal dribbled around the Michigan State defense and fired a left-footed shot, giving Minnesota an early 1-0 lead.
The Spartans responded quickly after halftime. Three minutes into the second half, Bella Najera fired a shot that was saved by Sarah Martin. Kennedy Bell converted on the rebound, tying the game 1-1.
In the 51st minute, Michigan State's Renee Watson gained possession in the center circle and played a long ball to Emerson Sargeant down the middle. Sargeant broke through the Minnesota backline to take a 2-1 lead.
The Gophers hit the road to face Michigan in Ann Arbor on Sunday at noon CT. The game will stream live on B1G+.
