No. 14 Minnesota Sweeps Lipscomb to Finish Road Trip
9/6/2025 7:18:00 PM | Volleyball
Calissa Minatee had a team-high six blocks
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 14 Minnesota volleyball took down the Lipscomb Bisons on Saturday night, three sets to none. The Gophers took the match 25-18, 25-15, 25-19.
"We were pretty strong in two important areas, serving and blocking," said head coach Keegan Cook. "Blocking has been a little bit of a slow start to this season as we get our younger athletes organized. There's kind of a quiet pressure that we apply that other teams feel but it's hard to see."
Minnesota tallied 11 blocks as a team after going for 12 last night.
Julia Hanson led Minnesota with 16 kills while McKenna Garr paced the backcourt with 14 digs. Calissa Minatee tallied six blocks to lead the defense while Stella Swenson ran the offense with 27 assists.
The Gophers (5-1, 0-0 Big Ten) outhit the Bisons (1-4, 0-0 ASUN) .358 to .184, tallying 35 kills to the Bisons 38. The Gophers had 11 blocks compared to just one for LU and had more aces (7 to 3).
Courtney Jones led Lipscomb with 15 kills while Sophia Hudepohl had 29 assists and nine digs.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Lipscomb jumped out early to a 4-2 lead before a block by Acevedo and Myers and a kill from Hanson tied it up. The two teams went back and forth up to 7-7 before the Gophers accelerated into a 6-1 run, getting two blocks and three kills. LU took a timeout trailing, 13-8. A 5-2 Bisons spurt brought it back to just two points at 15-13, but Minnesota answered back with a 4-1 run to go up 19-14, leading to another timeout. A Stella Swenson ace and a solo block from Minatee made it 21-14 after the break. LU would cut it to five at 23-18 before Minnesota closed it out 25-18 after a kill from Hanson and ace from Garr.
SET 2 | Minnesota kept its momentum going, scoring four of the first five points. Acevedo had an ace and Kinney a kill in the early start. LU would battle back, scoring nine of the next 15 to tie the set at 10-10. A long rally after that resulted in a Hanson kill to put Minnesota up 11-10, leading to a timeout from the 'U'. Two more Gophers points stretched the lead to 13-10, leading to a Bisons timeout. LU scored two of the next three to make it 14-12, but Minnesota accelerated after that, scoring 11 of the final 14 points to win, 25-15. Hanson and Georgia Lee had aces in the spurt while Minatee and Acevedo added two more blocks each. The Gophers took a two sets to none lead into the locker room at the break.
SET 3 | It was a back and forth first third of the set, with neither team leading by more than two. They split the first 20 points before Minnesota went on 6-1 run to take a 15-11 lead heading into the media timeout. Lauren Crowl posted three kills in the spurt. A pair of blocks from Myers helped Minnesota take a 17-11 lead, forcing a Bisons timeout. LU would close the gap to four at 21-17, forcing coach Cook into taking his first timeout of the set. Minnesota would close the match, 25-19, getting two kills from Hanson and one from Kinney.
