MINNEAPOLIS – No. 7 Minnesota (7-3, 1-1 B1G) won three of the first four matches but ultimately fell to No. 6 Nebraska (9-3, 2-0) Friday night at Maturi Pavilion, 20-12.
The dual ended up going chalk as the Golden Gophers won the four matches in which it had the higher-ranked wrestler, while the Cornhuskers took the other six in the 81st all-time meeting between the schools.
Action kicked off at 125 pounds with No. 9 Jore Volk topping Alan Koehler, 4-1. Volk got the lone takedown of the match with less than 30 seconds left in the opening period. The win was Volk's fourth in a row and pushes his record to 15-2 on the season and 2-0 in the Big Ten.
The Huskers evened the dual up at 3-3 behind a 1-0 win from No. 9 Jacob Van Dee at 133 pounds over Brandon Morvari, but Minnesota quickly took the lead back.
At 141 pounds, No. 10 Vance VomBaur took care of Jake Hockaday, 7-2. VomBaur used a takedown midway through the opening period to lead 3-2 going to the third. In the closing seconds, he rolled Hockaday over to seal his third win in a row and fifth in the last six matches. He's now 13-3 on the year and 2-0 in the conference.
The lead grew to 9-3 for Minnesota thanks to a 6-3 decision from No. 25 Drew Roberts at 149 over Nikade Zinkin. Roberts needed less than 30 seconds to crack the scoreboard, then rode out Zinkin for nearly the entire second period. Leading 3-2 going to the third, Roberts scored a reversal and racked up over 3:30 of riding time to improve to 2-0 in league action this season.
The first ranked match of the dual came at 157 pounds and proved to be the turning point in the dual. No. 19 Charlie Millard met No. 5 Antrell Taylor in their first-ever meeting. Millard trailed 1-0 through two periods, but took a 4-1 lead midway through the third thanks to a blast double. Taylor reversed but then let Millard escape to make it a 5-3 match with 45 seconds to go. Millard was seconds away from winning but Taylor got the go-ahead takedown and the fall at the 6:58 mark to send the match to intermission tied at 9-9.
Nebraska took the next two matches coming out of the break as No. 8 LJ Araujo defeated No. 11 Andrew Sparks at 165, 9-2, and No. 6 Christopher Minto topped No. 22 Ethan Riddle at 174, 11-4.
Minnesota cut the lead to 18-15 thanks to No. 3 Max McEnelly's overtime win over No. 9 Silas Allred at 184. Both wrestlers logged escapes in regulation, while in the extra session it was McEnelly who got the winning takedown off a duck under for the 4-1 win. McEnelly improves to 11-1 on the year and 2-0 in the Big Ten.
The Gophers would get no further, however, as the Huskers closed out the dual with a pair of decisions.
No. 12 Camden McDanel stopped No. 24 Gavin Nelson, 7-2, at 197 pounds, while No. 4 AJ Ferrari outlasted No. 10 Koy Hopke, 2-1, at heavyweight. Nebraska was then handed a deduction of one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct after Ferrari's win at heavyweight.
Minnesota is back in action next weekend with a pair of duals at Maturi Pavilion. Friday night, the Gophers host No. 2 Ohio State at 6 p.m. on Big Ten Network, while on Sunday the team welcomes in No. 25 Wisconsin for a 1 p.m. dual on Big Ten Plus.
