Minnesota Takes Down Oregon 65-60

Battle and Grocholski combine to score 39
EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Minnesota women's basketball team (13-6, 4-4 Big Ten) defeated the University of Oregon Ducks (14-7, 2-6 Big Ten) 65-60 on the road Wednesday night.Â
The Golden Gophers had three players score in double figures, led by Battle, who had 20 points and two steals. Grocholski added 19 points and six rebounds and Sophie Hart helped out with 14 points.Â
Finau Tonga pulled down two offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Minnesota, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 12 second chance points.
The Minnesota defense held Oregon shooters to only 32.2 percent from the field.
How It Happened
Minnesota kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 14-11.
Minnesota then started off the second quarter by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Hart, to take a 17-14 lead. The Gophers kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 27-24 advantage heading into halftime. Minnesota dominated in the paint, scoring 16 of its 16 points close to the basket.
Minnesota continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Battle, to expand its lead further to 36-29 with 7:34 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Ducks had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Gophers still entered the fourth quarter with a 44-42 edge. Minnesota turned five offensive rebounds into six second chance points on the way to scoring 17 total points in the quarter.
Minnesota started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Grocholski's three, to grow the lead to 55-42 with 6:46 to go in the contest. The Ducks narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Gophers still held on for the 65-60 win. Minnesota took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 21 points in the paint.
