Gophers Rally Past LIU Before Falling to Iowa State

Game One

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Golden Gophers broke through after a 6-6 tie in the fifth inning to take down the LIU Sharks 7-6 Friday.

Kylinn Stangl (1-0) got the win for Minnesota (5-6). The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on two hits, allowing no walks and striking out six.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Gophers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom of the first inning with the game still scoreless. Minnesota plated two runs off of LIU pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Tara Wolocko.

The Golden Gophers then held the Sharks scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Golden Gophers.

Minnesota's lead had evaporated by the time the fourth inning came around and turned into a 6-5 LIU advantage, when the Golden Gophers evened up the game at six.

The game stayed tied until the sixth inning, when Minnesota got moving again on offense. The Golden Gophers recorded a run on Brooklyn Jones' one-out RBI double, bringing the score to 7-6 in favor of Minnesota. The score remained 7-6 for the rest of the game, as the Golden Gophers held on for the win.

Sydney Schwartz (3-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Minnesota (5-7).

In the batter's box, the Golden Gophers were paced by Scarlett Kuhn, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a walk and an RBI. Tinley Easton put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Gophers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Minnesota managed to push across two runs in the inning. The Golden Gophers were unable to hold the lead, as Iowa State scored five times over the remaining six innings to grab the 5-2 win.
