Schwartz Shuts Down Hawkeyes as Gophers Take Series Opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Senior Sydney Schwartz tossed a complete-game shutout on Friday as the Minnesota Golden Gophers blanked the Iowa Hawkeyes, 2-0, in the opener of a three-game Big Ten series.

Schwartz (6-7) delivered a dominant performance in the circle for Minnesota (10-19, 2-2), going all seven innings while allowing just two hits, issuing no walks, and striking out three.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers wasted no time taking control, striking in the first inning. Senior Maggie Werner led off the game with a solo home run to give Minnesota an early 1-0 advantage.

Minnesota added an insurance run in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, Schwartz worked a walk to bring home junior Brooklyn Jones and extend the lead to 2-0.

GAME NOTES
» Schwartz threw a two-hit shutout.
» Minnesota took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
