MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Golden Gophers had a tough showing on Saturday, falling to the No. 6 Nebraska Cornhuskers 17-2 despite the efforts of senior Maggie Werner, who went 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI.
Junior Macy Richardson (3-10) took the loss in the circle for Minnesota (14-29, 6-11). Sophomore Natalie Susa started the ballgame and went two shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking two and striking out two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers were trailing 7-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Minnesota got an RBI single from junior Tara Wolocko, scoring Werner from second base.
The Cornhuskers expanded their lead to 17-1, with a 10 run fifth inning before the Golden Gophers offense got back to work. Minnesota pushed across a run on Werner's two-out RBI double, which narrowed the Cornhuskers lead to 17-2.
The Gophers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
