University of Minnesota men's basketball coach Niko Medved has announced that Malick Kordel (Oberhausen, Germany) will join the Golden Gopher program in June. Kordel comes to Minnesota after playing his freshman year with Michigan.
"Malick is an intimidating, athletic big, who moves really well for his size," Medved said. "He's a great lob threat, a rim protector and adds depth to our frontcourt. Spending a year at a high-level program, Malick knows what it's like to be on a winning team and we're excited to add him to the roster."
Kordel, a 7-foot, 2-inch center, started playing competitive basketball in 2021 and saw action in 14 games off the bench for the national champion Wolverines. Making his collegiate debut in the first game of the season, Kordel averaged 1.2 points and 1.5 rebounds in 4.2 minutes played. Before playing with Michigan, Kordel played 22 games with Fraport Skyliners Juniors, averaging 11.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, and shooting 71.7 percent from the field. In the 2023-24 season, Kordel played 18 games with Iserlohn, and in the 2022-23 season, he played in 25 games with BSV Wulfen and 15 games with the U19 NBBL. Kordel attended high school at the Bertha-von-Suttner Gymnasium and also played handball until switching to basketball.
