Mantzouranis Wins NCAA Hammer Throw Title

6/11/2026 12:34:00 PM | Men's Track & Field

The Greek is the second consecutive Gopher to win the NCAA hammer.

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the second consecutive season the University of Minnesota men have an NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Champion. Angelos Mantzouranis, a junior, captured his first NCAA title in the men's hammer throw on Wednesday afternoon at Hayward Field while teammate Anthony Barmes finished sixth for the No. 12 Golden Gophers in Eugene, Ore.

With a fifth-round toss of 75.78m (248-7) Mantzouranis helped the Gophers earn their second men's hammer throw title in a row - becoming the first program since 2012-13 (Virginia Tech) to go back-to-back in the hammer. The competition was a back-and-forth affair with Mantzouranis having to retake the top position three times. After an opening round foul Mantzouranis progressed through his series with four straight improvements that ended with his 75.78m (248-7) winning mark.

Barmes best throw of his final NCAA competition came in round two with his 71.91m (235-11). Barmes, a graduate student, sent all five of his marked throws beyond 70 meters with one foul in round five. The First Team All-America finish is a first for Barmes after three prior trips to the NCAA Championships where Barmes earned two Second Team All-American finishes and one Honorable Mention All-America honor. Barmes' 71.91m was also the best NCAA Championships throw of Barmes' college career - exceeding his 70.04m (229-9) from 2024 while he was at Drake.

After 13 team points in the men's hammer throw the Maroon and Gold added one team point in the form of Charles Godfred in the men's long jump. The sophomore claimed the No. 8 spot with his fourth-attempt 7.83m (25-8 1/4). Godfred's performance makes him the only Gopher in school history to earn All-American honors in the long jump three times - with all three of those performances being First Team All-America finishes.

Minnesota's next-best placement was Aaron Charles' 12th-place in the men's 200m semifinal. Charles, a Big Ten 200m silver medalist, clocked a 20.441 (+0.1 m/s) to finish 12th overall at Hayward Field. At 12th overall Charles became a Second Team All-American in the 200m - the first individual All-America honor for the senior. Wanyae Belle joined Charles as a Second Team All-American in the 200m with his 20.52 for 15th. Belle and Charles also took part in Minnesota's 4x100m relay team that ended the event with a 'Did Not Finish'.

Both John Caleb and Emmett Gerres also both finished 15th overall for the Maroon and Gold in their respective events. Caleb's 100m time of 10.201 (-1.1 m/s) ended the true freshman's NCAA season with a Second Team All-America honor and goes down as the second-best 100m finish in school history only behind Kion Benjamin's 14th place in 2023 (10.09). For Gerres, his first NCAA Championships ended with a time of 8:33.15 for one of the fastest times of his young career. The redshirt sophomore's 8:33.15 earned him his first All-America honors, earning a Second Team spot.

Lastly Minnesota's 4x400m relay team ended Wednesday's competition with a 15th-place finish in a season-best time of 3:04.12. The time improved on the quartet's No. 5 spot all-time at Minnesota and was good enough for sixth overall in heat three at Hayward Field. Max McQuide led off for the first time this season and clocked a 47.16. Dwyne Smith Jr. dropped a split of 45.95 on the second leg with Jayden Green's 45.74 coming on the third leg. Ramy Ayoub ran the anchor position for the Maroon and Gold and droppped a 45.29 to bring the Golden Gophers home. The 15th-place finish for the 4x400m relay is the best NCAA finish by Minnesota's men since 2013 (15th, 3:06.91).
