Winner of the team Academic Award with the highest GPA among the freshman class • Posted a 20-3 record in his first season at Minnesota, competing solely in open meets • Was one of eight Gophers to log 20 or more wins on the season, and the only freshman to do so • Went 11-3 at 174 in the first half of the season and 9-0 at 184 in the second half • Won two matches by pin and 11 by major decision, tying Mike Thorn for the team lead • Ended the season on an 11-match winning streak, and won 18 of his last 19 bouts • First collegiate win came in his first career match, over Phillip Downs of Northern State 13-3 on 11/14 • Champion at the North Country Open, going 5-0 and beating Mic Berg of St. Cloud State 4-3 in the championship match • Champion at the Worthington Open, going 4-0 and beating Mic Berg of St. Cloud State 5-2 in the championship match • Placed third at the Dragon Open, going 4-1 beating Carl Serck of Augustana with his only blemish a 0-2 setback to Jarrett Hall • Champion at the Kaufman-Brand Amateur, beating Celb Kolb of Nebraska 4-3 in the Championship match • Placed fifth at the Bison Open after a 3-2 mark at the tournament, beating William Fate of Southwest Minnesota in the fifth place match, with his only losses to teammates Scott Glasser and Cody Yohn
