TEAM / SERIES NOTES
• Today’s game was the 128th meeting in the all-time series with Wisconsin, and the series is once again tied, 60-60-8. The win for the Gophers was the first in the series since 2003, and it was Minnesota’s first win in Madison since 1994.
• With the victory, Minnesota qualifies for a bowl berth for the first time under P.J. Fleck. It will mark the sixth time in the past seven years that the Gophers will play in a bowl game. It’s the fourth bowl berth in six years as a head coach for P.J. Fleck.
• P.J. Fleck’s second-year mark at Minnesota is 11-13 and sixth-year career mark stands at 41-35.
• The win was the first Big Ten road victory for Coach Fleck, and was the first for the Minnesota program since a 40-17 win at Illinois on Oct. 29, 2016.
• The kickoff temperature was 42 degrees.
• Minnesota won the coin toss and received. Wisconsin kicked off and defended the north end zone.
• The Gophers, who entered the game leading the Big Tern and ranked 17th nationally in yards per completion (14.3), averaged 13.8 yards per completion versus the Badgers with one reception of greater than 25 yards.
• Minnesota’s defense held Jonathan Taylor to 120 yards rushing and zero touchdowns. A Heisman candidate, Taylor entered the game averaging 169.9 yards per game with 15 TDs this season.
• The Gophers outgained Wisconsin on the ground, finishing with 201 yards on 47 carries, while the Badgers had 170 yards.
• Minnesota’s offense averaged 5.2 yards per play and finished with 325 yards of total offense.
• The Gophers won the turnover battle, 4-0, coming up with a season-best three interceptions and one fumble.
• Minnesota had just two penalties for 20 yards, while UW was penalized six times for 54 yards.
• Minnesota won the time of possession battle, holding the ball for 35:06 to 24:54 for the Badgers.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
• Tanner Morgan completed 9-of-16 passes for 124 yards with no interceptions. For the season, Morgan has completed 82 of 139 passes for 1,269 yards and seven TDs (six INTs). Morgan’s yardage total ranks third all-time at Minnesota for a freshman QB. Fellow freshman Zack Annexstad’s 1,277 passing yards this season ranks second.
• Tyler Johnson led the Gophers with four catches (on six targets) for 76 yards. Johnson wraps up the regular season with team-bests of 74 catches for 1,112 yards and 10 TDs. Johnson passed K.J. Maye for second place on Minnesota’s single-season receptions list, while his 2018 yardage total ranks second behind Ron Johnson’s 1,125 yards in 2000.
• Johnson now has career totals of 123 catches for 1,930 yards and 18 TDs. He passed Da’Jon McKnight (1,859 yards) on the career yardage list and now ranks seventh all-time. Only six Gophers players have reached 2,000 career receiving yards.
• Mohamed Ibrahim led the Gophers with 26 carries for 121 yards and a TD. It was the freshman’s fourth 100-yard rushing game this season, as he increased his season totals to 171 carries for 936 yards and seven TDs. Ibrahim’s yardage total ranks third all-time for a Minnesota freshman RB.
• Bryce Williams rushed eight times for 50 yards and two late touchdowns, which sealed the victory for the Gophers. That gives Williams 500 rushing yards and four TDs on 116 carries this season.
• Rashod Bateman had two catches for 22 yards, which increases his freshman-record total to 49 catches for 670 yards this season. Bateman broke Ernie Wheelwright’s 2004 freshman record of 654 yards this afternoon. Bateman’s six TDs this season ranks second all-time for a freshman WR.
• Emmit Carpenter connected on field goals of 34, 23 and 42 yards and was 4-for-4 on PATs, giving him a 13-point afternoon. Carpenter is 15-of-20 on field goal attempts this season, and now has 51 career FGs. His 266 career points ranks third on Minnesota’s kick scoring list, just behind Chip Lohmiller’s 268 points. Carpenter passed Darrell Thompson on Minnesota’s all-time scoring list during today’s game.
• Demetrius Douglas returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown to give Minnesota a 17-0 lead in the second quarter. It was Minnesota’s second punt return for a TD this season, as Antoine Winfield Jr. had a 76-yarder in the season-opener versus New Mexico State on Aug. 30.
• Jacob Huff led the Gophers with 10 tackles (six solo), while also forcing a fumble and breaking up a pass.
• Thomas Barber recorded six tackles (two solo), including 0.5 TFL, and recovered a fumble late in the victory.
• Carter Coughlin finished with six tackles (two solo), which included half a sack and a forced fumble. For the season, Coughlin has 9.5 sacks, which ranks seventh at Minnesota for a single season, and his career total of 18 sacks ranks fifth.
• Julian Huff, Coney Durr and Chris Williamson each had interceptions, with Durr returning his pick for 25 yards
