TEAM / SERIES NOTES
• Today’s game was the 71st meeting in the all-time series with Illinois, and the Gophers hold a 38-30-3 lead. The loss for the Gophers snapped a three-game winning streak versus the Illini.
• P.J. Fleck’s second-year mark at Minnesota is 9-12 and sixth-year career mark stands at 39-34.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
• Tanner Morgan completed 14-of-27 passes for 258 yards and two TDs with no interceptions. In the last 10 quarters (two at Nebraska, four versus Indiana and four against Illinois), Morgan has completed 42-of-67 (63 percent) passes for 774 yards and five touchdowns.
• Tanner Morgan’s 86-yard touchdown pass to Rashod Bateman was Minnesota’s 6th-longest pass play since 1971, and it is the longest for the Gophers since Asad Abdul-Khaliq’s school-record 96-yard TD to Jared Ellerson at Northwestern on Oct. 4, 2003.
• Rashod Bateman tied his career-high with seven catches for a career-best 175 yards and TDs of 61 and 86 yards for his first career multiple-TD game. It is the second-straight 100-yard receiving game for Bateman. Bateman’s receiving yardage total was the most by a freshman since Ryan Thelwell’s 178 yards versus Northwestern on Oct. 15, 1994.
• For the season, Bateman has 42 catches for 578 yards and six touchdowns. His reception total breaks Ron Johnson’s freshman record of 38 during the 1998 season. Bateman needs 77 yards to break Ernie Wheelwright’s freshman record of 654 yards and needs two more TDs to break Wheelwright’s freshman receiving TD record of seven, both set during 2004.
• Tyler Johnson had five catches for 68 yards, snapping a streak of four consecutive 100-yard receiving games. But the junior WR moved into 10th on Minnesota’s career receiving yards list with 1,693 yards. He passed Dwayne McMullen (1,627) and Omar Douglas (1,681) during today’s game. For the season, Johnson leads the Gophers with 57 catches for 875 yards and eight TDs.
• Mo Ibrahim returned to the lineup after missing last week’s Indiana game and led the Gophers with 18 carries for 98 yards (5.4 ypc) and two TDs. For the season, Ibrahim leads the Gophers with 107 carries for 562 yards (5.3 ypc) and five TDs.
• Jordan Howden led the Gophers with a career-high nine tackles (eight solo).
• Payton Jordahl recovered his first career fumble, and Julian Huff recovered his second career fumble. Huff’s previous fumble recovery was versus Purdue on Nov. 5, 2016.
