A star halfback for the Golden Gophers, the speedster Billy Bye led his team in rushing during his freshman and sophomore seasons with a two-season total of 900 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was even named team MVP in his freshman season, a rarity.

In his 1949 senior season, Bye rushed for 561 yards and a record seven TDs. His career stats included 1,784 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns, in years that included three third-place Minnesota finishes in the Big Ten.

Bye played professionally for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League, and later served as business manager for the Minnesota Vikings. He also did some broadcasts of Gopher football games.
