When she graduated in 1985, Laura Coenen became the first Gopher women’s basketball player to have her jersey, No. 44, retired.
In her Minnesota career she became the program’s all-time scoring leader with 2,044 points, and set 12 other school records. Coenen scored in double figures in 91 of her 102 games, and averaged 20.0 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Among Coenen career highlights: Big Ten 1983 MVP, Kodak All-Region selections in 1983 and 1985, and AIAW All-Region pick in 1982.
After college, Coenen played basketball professionally in Europe. She was also an outstanding team handball goalie, playing for the U.S. in the 1986 Goodwill Games, and the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games.
