Perry Gehring blended well the classroom and the playing field. While playing football for the Gophers from 1956 to 1958, he earned Academic All-Big Ten and Academic All-America honors. He received the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor for athletic and academic achievement.

After graduating from the University in 1958, Gehring received his doctorate in veterinary medicine and a PhD in pharmacology. He was an associate professor in pharmacology at Michigan State University. In 30 years with The Dow Chemical Company, he formed its Environmental Health and Safety division, and would retire as vice president of research and development for Dow Agro Sciences.

Gehring was president of the Society of Toxicology, which presented him its Merit Award in 1983; the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology gave him its Founders Award the same year. He was also 1986-89 president of the International Union of Toxicology.
