Burnsville native Sue Roell Grimm capped off her Minnesota career with 1987 NCAA All-American honors in the 100-yard breaststroke for a fourth-place finish at the national championships.

The team co-captain led the Gophers to their fourth consecutive second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships that year, setting Big Ten records in the 100-yard breastroke and as part of the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Grimm swam on eight Big Ten Championship relay teams and was twice the Big Ten 100-yard breaststroke champion. She won at least one Big Ten title, and swam in the NCAA meet, each year of her career. At graduation, she held five school records.

She was a member of the 1987-88 U.S. National Swimming Team, received the 1987 Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor for athletic and scholastic achievement, was Minnesota women’s Senior Athlete of the Year, and was a finalist for both Big Ten Athlete of the Year and March of Dimes Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year. She was inducted into the U of M Aquatics Hall of Fame in 1994.
