Mary Jablonski became the first University of Minnesota woman to be crowned a Big Ten swimming champion when she won the 50-yard butterfly at the first annual Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in 1971.

She repeated as 50-yard butterfly champ the next year, setting a conference record time of :27.9. And then, she became the first-ever Gopher competitor in the AIAW National Championships, capturing the silver medal in the same event.

Jablonski capped off a brilliant career by setting Minnesota state records in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. She was inducted into the University of Minnesota Aquatics Hall of Fame in 1984.
