Playing end on both offense and defense, and punting besides, Ray King helped the Gophers claim three consecutive Big Ten championships and two national championships from 1935 to 1937.

Captain of the 1937 team, he earned All-Big Ten and All-American honors the same year.

King was also a three-year starter as an outfielder and pitcher on the Gopher baseball team, from 1936 to 1938. With a career batting average of more than .300, he was a factor in a pair of Minnesota Big Ten diamond championships.
