Larry Zilverberg, older brother of Gopher wrestler and fellow “M” Club Hall of Fame member Dan Zilverberg, came to the University of Minnesota from Hopkins Lindbergh High School.
As a Gopher, Larry Zilverberg was an All-American in 1974, 1975 and 1976, wrestling at 158 and 177 pounds. At the NCAA championships, he finished second in 1974, third in 1975, and sixth in 1976.
At career’s end, he was ranked in the top 20 for all-time career victories, with 82, and eighth in pins, with 25. The two-time team captain was also chosen to wrestle on the East-West All-Star teams in 1975 and 1976.
After graduating, Zilverberg made the 1976 U.S. Olympic team as an alternate. He was named a member of the 60-year Minnesota High School Wrestling “Dream Team,” is a member of the Midlands Hall of Fame, and was inducted into the Minnesota Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1997.
