Jim Malosky
Lifetime Achievement Award
HOF Class of 1996

From Crosby-Ironton High School in northern Minnesota, Jim Malosky came to the University of Minnesota to play quarterback under Coach Bernie Bierman.

Malosky played for the Golden Gophers from 1947 to 1949, graduating with a degree in education. He joined the U.S. Army, and coached a military football team – which he once joined on-field as quarterback when the regular QB was injured. (The coach threw a 97-yard touchdown pass!)

Back in civilian life Malosky taught and coached high school football, first at Morris High School and then Edina High School where his team won the mythical State Champion.ship. In 1958, he became the youngest head coach in University of Minnesota-Duluth history.

Over 34 years at UMD, Malosky rolled up more victories than any coach in NCAA Division II history, his 255-125-13 (.665) career record placing him 11th on college football’s all-time coaching win list.

Malosky guided his Bulldogs to MIAC titles in 1960, 1961 and 1973, and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships in 1979, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995 and 1996. Named Coach of the Year 10 times by the MAIC, NSIC and NAIA, he was inducted into the Minnesota High School Football Hall of Fame in 1994.

USA Football bestows the Jim Malosky Award to its NCAA D-II Coach of the Year.
