Earl Martineau earned Walter Camp All-American football honors as a senior at the University of Minnesota. Well known for his prowess on offense, he is particularly remembered for leaping over a pair of blockers to tackle a Wisconsin player otherwise sure to score a touchdown in a 1924 game.

Martineau was also an outstanding track and field athlete at Minnesota. He was awarded the Western Conference Medal for achievements in athletics and academics.

Martineau had won the Croix de Guerre and the Distinguished Service Cross for gallantry as a Marine Corps lieutenant in France in World War I. After playing with the Gophers, he became an assistant to head football coach Fritz Crisler at Princeton and at the University of Michigan.
