Kansan Margaret Sughrue Carlson earned her PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1983, in educational administration and public policy.

She became executive director of the University’s Alumni Association, and later Associate Vice President of Institutional Relations. Under her leadership, the Alumni Association and the Athletics Department became highly integrated.

A noted journalist, Sughrue Carlson became a regular columnist with Minnesota Magazine, the association’s award-winning monthly publication. She regularly highlights men’s and women’s sports issues, along with current events that affect Gopher alums everywhere.

She received the University’s Outstanding Service Award in 2000, in recognition of her leadership in the McNamara Alumni Center project. Her volunteer offices have included chair of the U of M’s 2002 Community Fund Drive, president of the Minneapolis Rotary, and vice president of the Minnesota Women’s Economic Roundtable.
