After U.S. Navy service from 1944 to 1946 and civilian work for several years, Bill McMoore came to the University of Minnesota, where he played football in 1950 and boxed from 1950 to 1951. As a senior, he was a semi-finalist in the NCAA boxing championship.
After graduating from Minnesota in 1951, McMoore was an instructor and assistant football and track coach at Lincoln University in Missouri, under head coach and former Gopher football player Dwight Reed.
McMoore returned to Minnesota in 1956 and launched a 31-year career with the Minneapolis Public Schools. He was a teacher and track and football coach at South High School, and principal of Anthony Junior High School, and made a point of improving athletic opportunities for young women.
After retiring from MPS in 1989, McMoore became Community Relations Manager for the Minnesota Timberwolves for five years. He was a member of the U of M Alumni Association Board of Directors, and 1994 president of the M Club, was inducted into the Minnesota State High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1987, and was in the 1991 inaugural class of the Minnesota State High School League Hall of Fame.
