Brian Meeker
Men’s Gymnastics, 1979-82
HOF Class of 2006

Brian Meeker, one of six Gopher gymnasts to win multiple Big Ten all around titles, did it in his 1981 junior and 1982 senior seasons. He earned All-American honors in each of those seasons, too, highlighted by a ninth place finish at the 1981 NCAA Championships.

Meeker won four other conference event titles during his career: floor exercise in 1980 and 1982, and horizontal bar and vault in 1982, becoming Minnesota’s first vault winner. Twice in his career Meeker posted a score of 9.80 on the vault, tops in school history. He helped lead Minnesota to three conference championships in four seasons.

Those accomplishments came despite being unable to see objects with his left eye.

An Edina native, Meeker was a five-time member of the U.S. National Team, competed on the 1983 Pan American Team, and a was a member of the 1984 gold medal winning U.S. Olympic gymnastics squad as an alternate. He won the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor for athletic and scholastic accomplishment in 1982, and was a 1982 finalist for the Nissen-Emery Award as the nation’s outstanding senior gymnast. He became a gymnastics judge and an officer in the National Gymnastics Judges Association (NGJA).
