Men’s Basketball, 1951-55
HOF Class of 1994
Chuck Mencel, point guard for the 1951-55 Golden Gophers, earned All-Big Ten honors in 1954 and 1955, along with All-America status in 1955.
With 1,391 points, Mencel averaged 15.1 points per game at Minnesota, and held five different scoring records during his career here – including the career scoring record that stood for nearly a quarter-century until Mychal Thompson broke it in the late 1970s.
In 1955, Mencel was awarded the Chicago Tribune’s Silver Basketball Award as the Big Ten’s MVP.
Drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers in the NBA’s second round, in 1955, Mencel averaged seven points and three assists per game over two seasons. Military service cut short his basketball career, although he returned to the Twin Cities to use his Minnesota business administration degree and build a very successful business career.
