Mark Merila was an All-American second baseman in 1993 and 1994, and a four-time an All-Big Ten selection, from 1991 to 1994.

He was the Gophers’ batting champion in 1993 and 1994, their Dugout Player of the Year in 1992, and their MVP in 1994. He set a single-season school record for batting average with his .452 in 1994, third-best in the nation that year. He set Minnesota career records with his .393 batting average and 187 walks.

The 1994 Big Ten Player of the Year was also a member of Team USA in 1993. He was drafted by Major League Baseball’s San Diego Padres.
