Captain of the Gophers’ 1964 hockey team as a senior, defenseman Dave Metzen also played on the 1967 U.S. National Team, which placed fifth in the World Games in Austria.

Metzen graduated from Minnesota in 1964 with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education, later receiving a masters degree in administration and a doctorate in educational administration, both also from the U of M.

He worked for 35 years in the South St. Paul Public Schools system as an elementary school teacher, elementary school principal, and superintendent. He served on boards including the University of Minnesota’s Board of Regents, the Ronald McDonald Foundation, Dakota Bank, Chamber of Commerce, American Red Cross, and the Mayor’s Action Committee. He also aided University fundraising, and helped establish the John Mariucci Open golf tournament.
