A 1986 graduate of Bloomington Kennedy High School, Marty Morgan won an NCAA Division II national championship as a true freshman at North Dakota State University. Transferring to Minnesota, he became a three-time NCAA All-American, two-time NCAA finalist, and an NCAA national champion as a senior.
Morgan one of every three opponents he faced in his college career, and as a junior pinned a record 21. His 39-0 senior season was only the school’s second perfect season.
Morgan finished his Gopher career 110-12 overall over just three years. He was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor for excellence in academics and athletics in 1991.
Continuing to wrestle after college, he won two Greco-Roman national titles, placed twice in the National Freestyles, and participated on two World Championships teams and one World Cup team. Morgan finished third at the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials, and second at the 1996 Trials. He placed twice in the National Freestyle Open.
Morgan, one of 12 children in a family that includes two older brothers who wrestled on Olympic teams, became Gopher head coach J Robinson’s top assistant and recruiting coordinator in 1996. He was named NWCA Assistant Coach of the Year in 1999.
