Butch Nash, a graduate of Edison High School in Minneapolis, played basketball and football for the Golden Gophers. A forward on the hardwood, he balanced hockey legend John Mariucci as football defensive ends. The pair helped lead their team to the 1936 national championship.
Nash became a teacher and coach after graduation, and after World War II service, became an Gopher football assistant coach, first for Bernie Bierman. He served in that staff role for 37 years, then seven more as a volunteer. In all, he worked with eight head coaches.
Minnesota’s Butch Nash award honors a student-athlete who is competitive in both spheres.
