Harvey O’Phelan attended the University of St. Thomas, graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in orthopedic surgery and became Associate Clinical Professor of orthopedic surgery here. He also served as orthopedic surgeon for Gopher athletic programs from 1962 to 1983.
He was team orthopedic surgeon for the Minneapolis Lakers in the late 1950s, for the Minnesota Twins from 1967 to 1987, for the U.S. Olympic team in 1972, for the USA World University Games five times between 1972 and 1993, and for USA Hockey teams in four World Championship series between 1986 and 1993. He was selected as a member of the International Medical Staff for the World University games.
O’Phelan is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, a member of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, a member of the American Academy of Sports Medicine, and past president of the Association of Professional Baseball Physicians.
