Erling Platou, a star of the Gopher hardwood in the years before World War I, after the War, in 1919, led his team to an undefeated season in which they were declared Big Ten and Helms Foundation national champions.

Team captain, Platou earned All-American honors and the Big Ten Outstanding Student Athlete Award that year.

Platou graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1924 and became a clinical professor of pediatrics there. He later founded Southwest Pediatrics Associates, one of the largest pediatric clinics in Minnesota, and founded and was first chairman of the Minnesota Medical Foundation.
