A pass-catching end and a kicker for the late-1940s Golden Gophers, Gordie Soltau earned All-Big Ten honors as a senior.

He played in the East-West Shrine Game, the College All-Star Game and the Hula Bowl, and was also a member of the Gopher hockey team.

As a football pro, the Duluth native played nine seasons with the NFL San Francisco 49ers, including 1952 and 1953, in which he led the league in scoring. Over his 49ers career he led the team in scoring with 644 points, 25 touchdowns and 70 field goals. He was honored as an All-Pro in 1952, 1953 and 1954.

Soltau’s professional career highlights include scoring 26 points in a victory over the Rams in 1951, catching 10 passes for a total of 190 yards against the Giants in 1952, and kicking four field goals to beat the Rams in 1956,

He was elected to the Bay Area Sports, the Duluth, and the Norwegian Halls of Fame, and was voted onto the San Francisco 49ers All-Time Team at two positions, end and kicker.
