Robert Tanner was the first University of Minnesota athlete to earn a combined nine varsity letters in football, baseball and basketball.
As a football end, Tanner made the All-America and All-Conference lists in 1929. He was also a two-time recipient of the Conference Medal of Honor for achievements as a student-athlete, and captain of the East squad in the East-West All-Star Game after his senior year.
Tanner also played forward on the basketball court, and was the 1929 captain of the baseball team.
After graduating from the University, Tanner played for the NFL Frankford (PA) Yellow Jackets.
