Jerry Thomas was an All-Big Ten and All-American Gopher pitcher in 1956, instrumental in leading Minnesota to its first NCAA championship and named the College World Series’ Most Outstanding Player.

Thomas tossed two complete games in the 1956 College World Series, including a five-hitter in the title game against Arizona. He also had two hits, including a triple and two RBI in the game.

Thomas finished his Gopher career with a then-record 21 wins, 24 complete games and 197 strikeouts. He signed a pro contract with the Detroit Tigers in 1957.
