Cathie Twomey blazed trails in middle-distance track at the University of Minnesota in the mid-1970s, dominating the sport like no one else before her.

She won eight conference championships in track and field, including three claimed by relay squads of which she was a member. She added a cross country conference title in the 1976-78. She was a two-time track and cross country All-American (1976-77).

Twomey achieved international running recognition after dominating the Big Ten during her collegiate career. She ran for Athletics West, out of Eugene, OR, and in 1984 was ranked second in the U.S. and eighth in the world in the 5,000 meter. She also she set the women's world record in the 20K in 1982.
