HOF Class of 2002

Charley Waters, known as “Shooter” and one of the most respected sports journalists in the Midwest, grew up in northeast Minneapolis and graduated from Minneapolis Edison High School.

He signed a minor league baseball contract with the Minnesota Twins, and in 1969 was called up to pitch in the big leagues for manager Billy Martin.

He played part of one season with the Twins before being traded to the Washington Senators, who sent him back to the minors. After playing pro ball for seven seasons, he retired and enrolled in the University of Minnesota’s Journalism School in 1975.

In “J” School, Walters wrote for the school newspaper, the Minnesota Daily, for two years. His first job out of college was with the St Paul Pioneer Press. He got his own column in the 1980s, has won many national and local sports writing awards, and has been named Minnesota Sports Writer of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association more than a dozen times.
