Dick Wildung
Football, 1940-42
HOF Class of 1993

Dick Wildung was a three-year starter at right tackle for the Golden Gophers, anchoring the back-to-back national championship teams of 1940 and 1941.

Wildung earned All-America honors both of those seasons, and in 1942 was team captain and MVP. Coach Bernie Bierman called him “the best tackle ever.”

After graduating, the Luverne, MN native played in the East-West Shrine and College All-Star games, and then served as a Navy lieutenant in World War II.

Back home, he was back on the football field, this time for the NFL Green Bay Packers from 1946 to 1951, and again in 1953, including four years as Packers captain. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1957, and into the Packer Hall of Fame in 1973.
