Dave Winfield
Baseball, 1971-73
Basketball, 1972-73

Dave Winfield, called by many as Minnesota’s best-ever all-around athlete, starred in both baseball and basketball here.

As a member of the legendary “Iron Five,” the power forward led the basketball Gophers to the Big Ten title in 1972.

On the baseball diamond, the St. Paul Central grad was a pitcher who earned All-America honors in 1973, the same year he led the Gophers to the College World Series, earning MVP honors along the way.

An All-Big Ten pitcher in all three of his Minnesota seasons, he finished his college career first in single-season strikeouts and second in career strikeouts.

Winfield then played 22 seasons in the major leagues with San Diego, New York, California, Toronto and Minnesota. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001, was named MVP of the 1992 World Series champion Toronto Blue Jays, and had his 3,000th career hit at the Metrodome with his hometown Twins.

Winfield is the only athlete drafted by the NBA, ABA, NFL and MLB.
