University of Minnesota head baseball coach Ty McDevitt was named the 16th head coach in program history on May 22, 2024, becoming just the fourth Minnesota head coach since 1948. McDevitt succeeds longtime skipper John Anderson, who won 1,390 games across 43 seasons.

In his first season leading the Gophers in 2025, McDevitt guided Minnesota to a 24-28 overall record and earned his first career head coaching victory with a 14-3 road win over the Houston Cougars on Opening Day.

In his second season at the helm in 2026, McDevitt helped lead the Gophers to their first 30 win season since 2018, leading Minnesota to a 30-23 overall record. The head skipper tallied his 50th career win as head coach with a 7-2 victory over Northwestern, securing the ball club’s first Big Ten conference series sweep at home in Siebert Field since 2019.

Before taking over the program, McDevitt spent six seasons as Minnesota’s pitching coach (2019-24) and previously served as a volunteer assistant from 2017-18. Under his direction, the Gophers developed into one of the Big Ten’s premier pitching staffs, highlighted by a standout 2024 campaign in which Minnesota led the conference in fewest earned runs and home runs allowed while ranking among the league leaders in ERA, strikeouts and hits allowed.

Over eight seasons on staff, McDevitt helped develop multiple All-Americans, a Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, a Big Ten Freshman of the Year and numerous All-Big Ten honorees. Since 2017, 11 Minnesota pitchers have been selected in the MLB Draft, including seven top-10 round picks. His list of developed professional arms includes Max Meyer, George Klassen, Lucas Gilbreath and Connor Wietgrefe.

McDevitt played a key role in transforming Meyer from a 34th-round high school draft pick into the No. 3 overall selection in the 2020 MLB Draft. Under McDevitt’s guidance, Meyer earned All-America honors, transitioned successfully from reliever to starter and became one of the nation’s most dominant pitchers.

Minnesota’s pitching success under McDevitt included the 2018 Big Ten Regular Season and Tournament Championships, the program’s first Super Regional appearance and a historic 2019 season in which the Gophers ranked among the nation’s top 10 in ERA and WHIP while setting a school record with 536 strikeouts. His pitching staffs consistently ranked among the Big Ten leaders in ERA, strikeouts and opponent batting average, while averaging 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings during his tenure.

Known nationally for his player development and analytical approach, McDevitt combines backgrounds in sociology and exercise science to build competitive, durable pitching staffs. He has been a featured speaker at coaching and analytics conferences and is recognized for implementing advanced technology and data-driven training methods to improve velocity, health and performance.

Prior to joining the Minnesota staff, McDevitt founded and instructed at The Cages and NorthStar Baseball Club, helping develop numerous Division I and professional pitchers, including former second-round MLB Draft pick Sam Carlson.

A former Gopher pitcher himself, McDevitt appeared in 45 career games from 2012-16 and helped lead Minnesota to the 2016 Big Ten Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. The Apple Valley, Minnesota native earned his degree in sociology from the University of Minnesota while pursuing graduate studies in sport and exercise science. He and his wife, Claire, have two children, Mila and Max.
